Welcome to localhost… wait, sorry, force of habit. Welcome to the public internet version of my brain.
I’ve finally resolved the merge conflicts in my schedule and pushed this site to production. If you are reading this,
the DNS has propagated, the SSL certificate is valid, and I haven’t accidentally rm -rf’d the server yet. Success!
So, what are you looking at?
This is BoBytes, my dedicated home on the internet. If you’ve stumbled onto this URL and are currently asking yourself, “Who on Earth is the author of this seminal piece of writing?”, you can find the full dossier over on the about page.
However, if you click over to the portfolio, you might notice it’s a bit… lean. I’m currently in the process of excavating my archives to fill that section out. It’s surprisingly challenging to decide what makes the cut. Does a design case study from pre-2020 even belong in a modern portfolio? Looking at interface designs from the “Before Times” feels a bit like looking at cave paintings—fascinating, but I’m not sure they explain why you should hire me to paint your living room today. I’m working on curating the stuff that actually matters.
What’s next?
Now that the foundation is poured, here is what you can expect from me moving forward. I plan to post monthly about my open-source activities (like my work on Monothematic). Let’s be honest: I’m announcing this publicly mostly so the shame of internet strangers keeps me accountable. I’m also building a widget to track what I’m currently reading, watching, and playing. Because obviously, knowing which game is ruining my sleep schedule is critical context for why my code comments are so snarky. And last but certainly not least, more content, hopefully of higher quality than this here post…
I am aiming for a weekly post. You can expect a mix of:
- Musings on usability and how we (often fruitlessly) struggle to measure it.
- Anecdotes from the work floor (names changed to protect the innocent… and the guilty).
- Thoughts on Open Source and Linux (I run Bazzite, so expect some KDE proselytizing).
- Occasional tirades about broader digital trends that annoy me.
A disclaimer on tone: My goal here is “insightful entertainment.” I am writing for humans, not for search engine crawlers or academic review boards. Please do not quote these posts to your boss as best-practice justification, and definitely don’t cite them in your Master’s thesis. Read them for a nod of recognition, a spark of an idea, or just to watch someone else yell at the cloud for a bit.
Stay in the Loop
If you want to keep up with the chaos:
- Follow my code on GitHub.
- Catch my bad takes on Bluesky.
- (I’ll share my handle for W just as soon as it actually launches. Any day now, right?)
I’m also polishing up an RSS feed for the old-school web purists among you. Watch this space.
Thanks for stopping by. Bookmark bobytes.nl/blog, and I’ll see you in the next commit.
